The gastric balloon, also known as the intragastric or weight loss balloon, is a temporary, non-surgical weight loss procedure designed to assist individuals struggling with obesity. A soft, expandable silicone balloon is inserted into the stomach and inflated with saline or air to reduce stomach capacity.
This procedure limits food intake and promotes satiety, helping patients lose weight effectively without surgery. The gastric balloon is non-invasive, reversible, and does not require any permanent alterations to the stomach.
How Does the Gastric Balloon Work?
Placement Procedure:
- The bariatric surgeon begins with an initial gastroscopy to assess the stomach and determine the ideal placement for the balloon.
- A catheter is inserted through the throat to deliver the deflated balloon to the stomach.
- A device called an endoscope, equipped with a camera, is used to ensure precise placement without incisions.
Balloon Inflation:
- Once in place, the balloon is filled with a saline solution or air to occupy a significant portion of the stomach cavity.
Post-Procedure Adjustments:
- Temporary side effects may include bloating, nausea, diarrhea, or cramps, but these can be managed with medication.
- The balloon remains in place for six months before being removed, providing a controlled timeframe for weight loss and lifestyle adjustments.

Gastric Balloon Removal
The gastric balloon is typically left in place for around six to twelve months depending on the type of intragastric balloon chosen. After this, it is removed using the endoscope, or any similar method to which it was inserted.
During gastric balloon removal, the patient is sedated. The entire procedure requires roughly 30 minutes to complete. If required, as determined by the bariatric doctor, a new gastric balloon may be inserted.
