What is bariatric revision surgery?

Bariatric revision surgery is recommended when the outcomes of a previous weight loss surgery are no longer effective or the initial goals were not achieved. This procedure is also used to address complications or issues that arise following a primary bariatric surgery.

Reasons for Bariatric Revision Surgery

  • Dysphagia: Difficulty swallowing as a result of complications from the original surgery.
  • Ulcers or Scar Tissue Formation: Development of ulcers or scar tissue blocking the digestive tract.

Bariatric Revision Surgery Procedures

Gastric bypass revision
The procedure is performed to correct an enlarged gastric pouch. Either the intestinal bypass is increased, or the stomach size is decreased, depending on the best approach. Also, it is possible to have a gastric band over bypass.
Gastric sleeve revision

Here, the gastric sleeve maybe converted to gastric bypass, or gastric sleeve revised.

Usually, surgery is performed due to stomach expansion over time, or the patient may have developed gastric reflux.

Gastric band revision

The procedure is performed if the gastric band compromises the patient's health. In this case, gastric bypass or gastric sleeve operations can be performed. It is the most frequently revised bariatric surgery due to the gastric band loosening or even slipping.

Gastric plication revision
The procedure is performed if the patient has not achieved satisfactory weight loss results or has regained weight. Instead, gastric bypass or gastric sleeve can be performed.
